Understanding the Issues
As soon as I submitted my petition to join this race, I began an ongoing quest to understand the job of a councilperson and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our city.
I’ve always watched council meetings on TV but in June I switched to attending these meetings live. At the same time I began making the rounds at council committee meetings. They’re open to the public but few ever take advantage of this opportunity. Committee meetings are where the real work of council is done. By the time an item shows up on your TV screen it’s been discussed for weeks, sometimes months, to create a wise course of action.
Sitting in meetings as an observer is great but as any teacher will tell you, you can sit in a classroom all day and not learn anything. I’ve gone a step further, I’ve spent time with current council members, our economic development director, and anyone else I can get my schedule to line up with in a one-on-one setting, asking questions and filling in the gaps from the meetings. I’ve read through the city’s financial reports and I’ve studied the Comprehensive Plan. I’ve even shared where I stand on the issues of the day.
Harrison, you deserve a councilman who can hit the ground running in January!
This is part 2 of a 5 part series of posts making the case for why I deserve your vote this November. You can find the full series here.
